Liver Disease Symptoms

Liver disease is a collective term relating to all of the conditions that affect the normal functions of the liver. The common symptoms are yellowing of the eyes or skin (a condition called jaundice), abdominal pain, and any abnormal results coming from liver function tests.

This article focuses on the different symptoms of 15 liver diseases.

1.Amebic Liver Abscess

Definition: When an intestinal parasite is found in the body, pus may accumulate in the liver.

Symptoms:

  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Jaundice
  • Joint pain
  • Sweating
  • Abdominal pain
  • General discomfort
  • Appetite loss and weight loss

2.Autoimmune Hepatitis

Definition:  A condition characterized by liver inflammation when immune cells attack normal liver cells mistaking them as bad cells.

Symptoms:

  • Itching
  • Fatigue
  • Dark urine
  • Loss of appetite
  • General discomfort
  • Abdominal distention
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Clay or pale-colored stools

3.Biliary Atresia

Definition:  A congenital condition characterized by a block on the tube that carries bile from the liver to the gallbladder.

Symptoms: Because this condition is present at birth, the baby may look normal during the first month. However, weight loss and irritation may manifest towards the later months and may progress to these symptoms:

  • Dark urine
  • Slow growth
  • Floating stools
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Slow weight gain
  • Foul-smelling stools

4.Cirrhosis

Definition:  The final stage in chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of the liver and poor liver functions.

Symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Jaundice
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion
  • Weakness
  • Impotence
  • Weight loss
  • Nosebleeds
  • Blood in stool
  • Bleeding gums
  • Blood vomiting
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Clay or pale-colored stools
  • Breast development in men
  • Abdominal pain or indigestion
  • Fluid accumulation in the legs
  • Red and small spider-like blood vessels on the skin

5.Delta Agent or Hepatitis D

Definition:  A type of liver infection that affects people who have Hepatitis B.

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice
  • Joint pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dark-colored urine

6.Drug-induced Cholestasis

Definition: A condition where the flow of bile from the liver slows down due to medicine intake.

Symptoms:

  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Jaundice
  • Vomiting
  • Dark urine
  • Pale stools
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rash from the drug
  • Fever from the drug

7.Hemochromatosis

Definition: This condition is a result of too much iron absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Body hair loss
  • Loss of energy
  • Skin darkening
  • Abdominal pain
  • Lack of sexual interest

8.Hepatitis A

Definition: An infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus which causes the inflammation of the liver.

Symptoms:

  • Itching
  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice
  • Low fever
  • Dark urine
  • Appetite loss
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Clay or pale-colored stools

9.Hepatitis B

Definition: The inflammation of the liver due to the Hepatitis B virus.

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Jaundice
  • Low fever
  • Appetite loss
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Muscle and joint pains

10.Hepatitis C

Definition: A disease which is viral in nature that causes swelling of the liver.

Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Itching
  • Jaundice
  • Appetite Loss
  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Clay or pale-colored stools
  • Esophageal or stomach bleeding

11.Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Definition: Also called cancer of the liver.

Symptoms:

  • Jaundice
  • Tenderness
  • Easy bruising
  • Easy bleeding
  • Abdominal pain
  • Enlarged abdomen

12.Pyogenic Liver Abscess

Definition: Indicates a pus-filled portion of the liver.

Symptoms:

  • Jaundice
  • Weakness
  • Dark urine
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite loss
  • Fever or Chills
  • Abdominal pain
  • Clay-colored stool
  • Vomiting and nausea

13.Reye Syndrome

Definition: A condition with unknown causes that results to acute brain and liver damage among children.

Symptoms:

  • Coma
  • Seizures
  • Lethargy
  • Confusion
  • Mental changes
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Decelerbrate posture or the weird placement of the legs and the arms

14.Sclerosing Cholangitis

Definition: Pertains to the scarring, destruction, and the swelling of the bile ducts.

Symptoms:

  • Enlarged liver
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Appetite loss and weight loss
  • Repeated cholangitis episodes

15.Wilson’s Disease

Definition: A genetic disease characterized by too much copper in body tissues.

Symptoms:

  • Jaundice
  • Dementia
  • Weakness
  • Vomiting blood
  • Slow movements
  • Delirium or confusion
  • Impairment of speech
  • Changes in personality
  • Uncontrollable movement
  • Ataxia or difficulty in walking
  • Tremors in the hands or arms
  • Behavioral or emotional changes
  • Neuroses or distress and phobias
  • Abnormal posture of legs and arms
  • Jerky and uncontrollable movement
  • The expressions in the face may move slowly
  • Stiffness and a difficulty of moving legs and arms
  • Abdominal distention or the enlargement of the abdomen
